Batsh
Second Floor / Size : 310x390 / Metal doorway /Aerosols / 2012
“I created this painting as a form of interrogation. I knew that the building was going to be refurbished and the area renovated, like many local spots – thereby forcing many of the poorer local residents to move further away. Gentrification – the type we’ve already seen from Harlem to Berlin. So I painted a black and white character with a grave, melancholy expression that seems to say, “Is that all our lives are worth?”

Batsh
Batsh was born in Dakar in 1975. He first started working in graffiti in 1990, then adapted, incorporating digital tools into his artistic endeavours. A self-taught artist, he is known primarily for his portraits, his urban scenery and his uncluttered towns. He is an extremely active figure in hip hop culture, and his influences include the underground New York scene – from Boogie Down Productions through the Juice Crew to the great jazz and soul classics. Today, one is equally likely to come across his frescoes in abandoned locations or in art galleries.
