Da Cruz
Fourth Floor / Window and wall / Glycero paints and aerosols / 2012
“When I was painting on this building, I wanted to add something that would make it stand out. These big eyes were also a way of giving it an expression – projecting the interior onto the exterior. Taking its unusual architecture into account was a way of respecting it, and tapping into its strength. The relief work gave me the opportunity to create something three-dimensional. I adapted my sketch to the medium, not the other way round. With locations like this, you have to use the strength of what’s already present instead of just submitting to it – if you don’t, right from the start you’ll be in a fight you’ve no chance of winning. The building is stronger than you are.”

Da_Cruz
Dacruz started out in graffiti at the end of the 80s, but did not become prolific until the early 2000s. His style is easily identifiable and suggests a sort of universal language, one that brings together naïve and primitive worlds with the contemporary urban jungle. Concentrating on legal graffiti that frequently shades over into street art, he exhibits his work and takes part in numerous urban culture-related events. In 2012 he, Popof and Marko were given access to the Magasins Généraux building in Pantin and went on to paint the façade as part of the “Eté du Canal” summer festival.
